How to Light Your Home

Lighting is the difference between a tree that’s decorated and a home that glows. The trick the stylists use isn’t more lights — it’s layering different kinds of light at different heights. Here’s how to build that warm, magical feeling room by room.

1. Start with the tree

As a guide, aim for around 100 lights per 30 cm of tree height — so a 2.1 m tree looks lush with roughly 700 lights. Wrap them deep into the branches near the trunk first, then work outward. This gives the tree a glowing core rather than a flat sparkle on the surface. Many of our trees come pre-lit, so this step is done for you.

2. Choose your white

Warm white reads cosy, traditional and inviting — it’s the safest choice for most homes. Cool white feels crisp, modern and “snowy,” pairing beautifully with flocked trees. Multicolour is playful and nostalgic, perfect for a fun family room. Pick one temperature and keep it consistent across the space for a considered look.

3. Layer beyond the tree

This is where a home goes from nice to unforgettable. Add light at a few different heights:

  • Up high: drape fairy lights through a garland along the mantel or staircase.
  • Mid level: a lit wreath on the wall or door.
  • Outdoors & entry: festoon lighting across a patio, or a lamp post by the door to welcome guests.

4. Warm up the whole room

Turn off the harsh overhead lights at night and let the Christmas lighting do the work, with a candle or two for flicker. The softer and lower the light, the more magical the room feels.
