Choosing Your Tree Size
Choosing a Christmas tree should feel exciting — not like a maths exam. But the single biggest thing that makes a tree look “right” in a room isn’t the baubles or the lights. It’s the size. Here’s how to get it perfect the first time.
Start with your ceiling height
Measure from the floor to the ceiling, then subtract at least 30 cm. That gap gives your tree topper or star room to breathe instead of bending against the ceiling. As a quick guide:
- Standard ceilings (2.4 m): a 1.8 m–2.1 m tree looks full and generous.
- High or raked ceilings (2.7 m+): step up to 2.3 m–2.7 m so the tree still feels like the hero of the room.
- Apartments & smaller spaces: a 1.5 m tree — or a potted mini tree on a console — keeps things cosy without crowding.
Think about width, not just height
A tree’s base diameter decides how much floor it eats. Measure the spot where it will stand — especially if it’s tucked into a corner or beside a walkway. A slim or “pencil” profile is a lifesaver in tight hallways and entryways, while a full traditional shape suits an open lounge.
Leave room for the real magic
Remember you’ll be adding presents underneath, a tree skirt or basket around the base, and decorations that reach outward. Give yourself a little margin on every side so the finished display looks intentional, not squeezed in.
Our rule of thumb
When you’re between two sizes, go up. A slightly taller tree almost always looks more elegant than one that feels a touch small for the room — and it’s the detail guests notice first.
